2008 OCEA Award Winners! OCEA Names Honda of America Manufacturing as the 2008 E. Sam Sovilla Award of Excellence WinnerCongratulations to Honda of America Manufacturing, Inc!Honda began their Co-op Program in 1994 with 10 students participating. Currently, Honda Manufacturing of America (HAM) has around 170 co-op assignments annually in the following fields of study: business, purchasing, information technology, engineering and health & safety. Co-op students come from between 60-80 colleges & universities, mostly from Ohio and the Midwest region. HAM has an established Supervisor and Mentor program (both parties receive training), an online training program which includes learning about the Honda Way, offers onsite educational courses that range from one day to one week and offers housing if needed. Housing is 60-70% covered by the company and includes several amenities. In addition, Honda contributes financially to organizations, communities and universities. HAM conducts several information sessions on campuses to provide more personal interaction with prospective co-ops in addition to attending career fairs. Students are placed according to their assignment goals and phone screenings. In the past year 35-40% of HAM’s entry level positions were filled by co-op students. Honda has been involved with OCEA since 1997 and consistently has representatives serve on the OCEA Board in several capacities. OCEA Names Steve Cahill the 2008 Employer Member of the YearCongratulations to Abercrombie & Associates’ Steve CahillSteve is a 1976 graduate of The University of Cincinnati (The Ohio College
of Applied Science) and went through the co-op program while a student there. OCEA Names Sue Young as the 2008 Educator Member of the YearCongratulations to Susan J. Young of Bowling Green State University! Susan has been a member of OCEA since she started with the Co-op & Internship Program of Bowling Green State University in 1989, and began her service to OCEA by joining the Public Relations Committee in 1990. She has been a long-time member of the OCEA Board, chairing the following committees: Training, Research, External Relations and Awards. As Training Chair her committee developed a Training Manual for Co-op Supervisors. While Research Chair she facilitated the creation of an employer brochure listing majors offered by OCEA colleges and universities, summarizing the numbers of students statewide participating in co-op, the total earnings of those students, and the number of employers utilizing OCEA school students. She served as co-chair of the Employer Relations committee. She co-chaired the 25th Anniversary conference at Maumee Bay State Park, serving as program chair; and served on the conference committee at Cherry Valley Lodge. She facilitated a co-op alumni student panel presentation at Maumee Bay, and at the conference at the Ohio Southern Hotel, a session presenting faculty, administrator and OCEA Educator research collaboration. She summarized the employer and educator strategy discussion at the breakfast session at Cherry Valley Lodge. As a Board member she participated in two OCEA luncheons held at the Vern Riffe Center, in Columbus, OH, to bring the Co-op message to the state senators and representatives. She organized an open forum in Columbus, OH for OCEA past and current presidents to discuss external relations and develop a strategic plan. She also co-facilitated an OCEA open forum on assessment, showcasing the various assessment methods and venues offered by OCEA member schools and the Washington Center Internship Program. A deeply committed student proponent, Susan received the Golden Key Friends award from the BGSU Golden Key Chapter. |
